Symply Releases ATOM2, Making LTO Tape Management Easier for Everyone

Free cross-platform utility brings diagnostics, firmware management and LTFS tools together in one accessible application for new and experienced LTO users

Cambridge, UK – 20 October 2026 – Symply, a global provider of professional storage solutions, has announced the general availability of SymplyATOM2, the next generation of its free LTO tape drive management and diagnostic software.

Built for macOS and Windows, SymplyATOM2 provides an accessible set of tools for managing, maintaining and troubleshooting Symply LTO tape products. Its clear graphical interface is designed to help people who are new to LTO, whilst also providing the detailed diagnostics and controls required by experienced tape users and support professionals.

SymplyATOM2 brings together essential tape operations, drive diagnostics, firmware management and LTFS tools without requiring command-line knowledge or a collection of separate third-party utilities. This makes it a one-of-a-kind companion for Symply LTO users, providing a consistent way to understand the condition of their tape drive and media, carry out routine maintenance and gather detailed information when support is required.

“LTO is trusted for protecting some of the world’s most valuable data, but the tools used to manage tape hardware have traditionally been aimed at experienced technical users,” said Keith Warburton, CEO at Symply. “With SymplyATOM2, we wanted to make essential LTO management and diagnostic functions accessible to everyone. A first-time user can quickly understand what is happening, whilst an experienced operator can access the detailed information needed to investigate a problem.”

Faster, clearer diagnostics

Direct SCSI diagnostics help identify drive issues, with results sent straight to Symply Support through the built-in Submit to Support function.

LTFS checking and recovery

ATOM2 can verify LTFS tapes, recover damaged structures and perform a Full Write Test across the tape surface.

Secure, simpler updates

ATOM2 verifies digitally signed firmware before installation and provides in-app software updates, including automatic reconnection of iSCSI drives following firmware upgrades.

Complementary to archive software

SymplyATOM2 is a companion tool, not a replacement for backup, data protection or archive software. Those applications handle scheduling, cataloguing, retention and automation, while ATOM2 provides direct access to the LTO hardware and media tools needed to maintain, test and troubleshoot Symply tape systems.

Availability and compatibility

SymplyATOM2 is available now for macOS and Windows and is free to use with supported Symply LTO products. The software supports LTO-6 through LTO-10 drives installed in supported Symply systems, with Thunderbolt, SAS and iSCSI connectivity. It requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, or Windows 10 or 11.

SymplyATOM2 can be downloaded from the Symply Support Portal.
