LTO-9 media initialization
LTO-9 introduced a one-time media initialization (sometimes called optimization or characterization). The first time a new LTO-9 cartridge is loaded, the drive calibrates it for LTO-9’s higher track density, which improves reliability for the life of the tape.
- It happens once per cartridge—after that, the tape loads normally.
- It usually takes around 20 minutes, though some cartridges can take longer.
- Plan ahead for big jobs: initialize new tapes before a large backup or offload so they’re ready when you need them. Tape libraries can do this in the background.
- LTO-8 media used in an LTO-9 drive doesn’t need initialization.
Why choose LTO-9?
- Works with your LTO-8 archive: read and write LTO-8 tapes in the same drive.
- Compact half-height options: including the smallest single-drive desktop units, and 1U rackmounts with two drives.
- A mature, proven format: widely supported by archive and backup software, with lower drive and media costs than the newest generation.
- Mix generations in one system: dual-drive XTH and 1U models can combine LTO-9 with an LTO-8 or LTO-7 drive (depending on model), so older archives stay accessible.
LTO-9 or LTO-10?
LTO-9 and LTO-10 are both current generations. LTO-10 holds 30 or 40 TB per cartridge, but it’s full-height only, costs more today, and can’t read LTO-9 or older tapes. LTO-9 offers LTO-8 compatibility, compact half-height drives and lower costs. Which fits best depends on your archive size, existing tapes and budget—see the full comparison on our LTO-10 tape drives page.
