Reliable and Affordable LTO Ultrium Tape Drive Solutions
Reliable and Affordable LTO Ultrium Tape Drive Solutions
A SymplyPRO LTO Ultrium tape drive is a professional magnetic tape storage unit that connects directly to your workstation.
SymplyPRO LTO Ultrium tape drives are available with Thunderbolt, Ethernet, and SAS connectivity, supporting LTO-7, LTO-8, LTO-9, and LTO-10 configurations in both half-height and full-height form factors.
LTO tape supports the 3-2-1-1 backup strategy, with WORM media and AES-256 hardware encryption built in for security and compliance. Once a tape cartridge is ejected from the drive, it is fully offline — making it inherently protected against ransomware and network-based threats.
Explore Symply’s full range of desktop LTO Ultrium tape drive solutions below. New to tape? Learn how the 3-2-1-1 strategy works, why LTO is essential for data-heavy workflows, and how it can dramatically reduce your long-term storage costs.
SymplyPRO drives are fully compliant with the LTO Consortium standards.

1 Recommended: The recommended operational/storage environmental envelope provides guidance on the environmental range for optimal performance and high reliability. This environmental range protects for 30-year archival storage.
2 Allowable: The allowable operational/storage environmental envelope defines the test limits to verify that the equipment will function within the environmental envelope. This environmental range is defined for operational storage of less than 6 months.
3 Shipping: When shipping media over extended environmental ranges, shipping times should be limited to minimize the duration of media being exposed to varying environmental conditions at lower and upper ranges. LTO tape media specifications provided by the LTO program at www.lto.org or specifications provided by the media manufacturer.
Note: The prolonged exposure to conditions outside the recommended range, especially approaching the extremes of the allowable operating environment, can result in decreased equipment reliability and longevity. An occasional short-term excursion into the allowable envelope is generally acceptable but may result in performance and reliability implications and higher power consumption.
All Symply dual-drive desktop systems feature SymplyCABLELESS™ technology, a unique design that makes LTO drives quick and easy to remove, service, or upgrade. Start with a single LTO drive and add a second in seconds—without ever powering down the system. Upgrading to the next LTO generation is just as simple.
In the unlikely event of a drive issue, the affected drive can be removed and replaced without shutting down the entire unit, and only the failed drive needs to be returned for service. Simple, flexible, and designed for maximum uptime—exactly what you’d expect from Symply.

Installing an additional drive |

SymplyPRO Ethernet desktop LTO tape drives bring tape into the virtual era by making LTO drives (and libraries) accessible across standard Ethernet (iSCSI). Multiple hosts or guest operating systems can access the drives over your network—each drive is used by one connected host at a time—without the need for costly Fibre Channel infrastructure. Windows and Linux include an iSCSI initiator; on macOS, the included ATTO Xtend SAN license provides it. By leveraging existing network infrastructure, organizations can lower costs, simplify operations, and scale easily as data grows.
Key benefits include:
- Reliability & Flexibility: Network tape access for multiple physical or virtual hosts, live VM migration with uninterrupted tape operations.
- Scalability & Control: Expand easily, by attaching existing SAS tape devices to the SymplyPRO Ethernet Desktop and manage multiple systems from a single backup server (physical or virtual).
- Efficiency: Faster backups and restores, while eliminating Fibre Channel costs and SAS distance limitations.
SymplyPRO Ethernet brings together two 10 GbE iSCSI interfaces with a robust all-metal design that’s simple to use, and low cost per TB storage capacity. Every enclosure integrates a premium PSU and efficient cooling. Choose from a dual-drive XTH desktop with one or two half-height LTO-7, LTO-8 or LTO-9, or XTF with a single full-height LTO-9 or LTO-10 drive. All dual-drive desktop models use our SymplyCABLELESS™ architecture for fast serviceability and easy upgrades.
Every SymplyPRO Ethernet configuration supports Linear Tape File System (LTFS), the open format for simple, cross-platform interchange, using the included Hedge Canister or YoYotta archive software, or any other LTFS-compatible application of your choice. In addition, SymplyPRO Ethernet is compatible with leading backup and archive applications that support LTO —Veeam Backup & Replication, Cohesity NetBackup, Commvault, IBM Spectrum Protect, Arcserve, Retrospect, Bacula, Bareos, and media-focused tools such as Archiware P5, Hedge Canister, YoYotta, and XenData.

Ethernet

Overview

Overview
Purpose-built for DIT applications, SymplyPRO DIT Thunderbolt is a full-featured desktop LTO tape drive system for backup, archive and transfer, designed specifically for on-set and DIT data protection, with features that enhance every production and post-production pipeline.
SymplyPRO DIT Thunderbolt is based on our advanced SymplyPRO desktop line—rugged metal-alloy enclosure, premium power supply and efficient cooling—then adds multi-access ingest: a front dock for any 2.5-inch SSD or Atomos Master Caddy to enable fast, all-in-one DIT operations (ingest → verify → to-tape). Choose single-drive desktops with half-height LTO-7, LTO-8 or LTO-9; XTH with dual half-height drives; or XTF with a single full-height LTO-9 or LTO-10 drive. All dual-drive desktops use our SymplyCABLELESS™ architecture for rapid serviceability and easy upgrades.
Each model comes equipped with two Thunderbolt™ 3 ports that support daisy-chaining (compatible with Thunderbolt 4 and 5 computers and 40Gbps USB4 ports), with one port delivering 60W of power for device charging. For additional flexibility, every unit also includes SAS Host and SAS Expansion ports, allowing you to connect other SAS devices to your Thunderbolt computer, or use the drive with a non-Thunderbolt workstation.
Every SymplyPRO DIT Thunderbolt configuration supports Linear Tape File System (LTFS), the open format for simple, cross-platform interchange, using the included Hedge Canister or YoYotta archive software, or any other LTFS-compatible application of your choice. It’s also compatible with leading backup and archive applications that support LTO— media-focused tools such as Archiware P5, Hedge Canister, YoYotta, and XenData; plus broader IT platforms including Veeam Backup & Replication, Cohesity NetBackup, Commvault, IBM Spectrum Protect, Arcserve, Retrospect, and the open-source Bacula, and Bareos.
On Windows and Linux, SymplyPRO DIT Thunderbolt integrates with standard platform tools and LTO software stacks (e.g., IBM tape drivers, IBM Spectrum Archive LTFS, and ITDT diagnostics). On macOS and Windows, SymplyATOM2 provides drive diagnostics, verified firmware updates, and LTFS tape check and repair for SymplyPRO drives. This ensures straightforward deployment in mixed environment.
