SymplyPRO DIT Thunderbolt LTO is a unique full-featured backup, archive and transfer system designed specifically for on-set and DIT data protection use with features that can enhance every production and postproduction pipeline.
Unlike other solutions, this is not a repurposed generic “off the shelf” IT chassis with a new logo. The SymplyPRO DIT Thunderbolt was designed by working with media professionals and hearing their needs and wants. We took what they asked for, added high-quality components, and SymplyPRO DIT Thunderbolt was born.
3-2-1 Data Protection Strategy
The 3-2-1 data protection strategy is crucially important in DIT workflows. Indeed, large streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon dictate the mandatory implementation of the 3-2-1 rule to safeguard OCF (original camera footage), provide off-site backup, and fulfil long-term archiving of series and films. Netflix lists LTO tapes as an acceptable archival format and a critical component in meeting their partners management requirements.
3: Always maintain at least three (3) copies of your data.
2: Store your copies across at least two (2) different storage mediums
1: Store at least one (1) of your copies at an offsite location.
Symply recommends adopting a 3-2-1-1-0 policy. The first three steps are the same but with two additional steps…
1: Keep at least one (1) of the copies offline.
0: Be sure to have verified the copies created have been made with zero (0) errors (and test a restore).
About SymplyDIT LTO
The SymplyPRO DIT Thunderbolt is based on our advanced desktop SymplyPRO product line featuring a rugged metal alloy enclosure, premium power supply and cooling. Then we added multi-access technology that combines docking support for any 2.5” SSD or Atomos Master Caddie for fast all-in-one DIT operations. Comprising space-effective single desktop designs and innovative dual-drive desktop systems featuring Symply CableLess technology, making them highly serviceable and upgradeable, SymplyPRO DIT Thunderbolt delivers more.
Each SymplyDIT LTO system includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports for daisy chaining and fast device charging. They also uniquely include a SAS Expansion Port and SAS Host Port in case you need to connect other SAS devices to your Thunderbolt-equipped computer or use it with a non-Thunderbolt workstation.
Configurations are available with LTO-7, LTO-8, and LTO-9 Half-Height drives, and the latest Full-Height LTO-9 drive with native 18TB raw capacity and read/write speeds of up to 400MB/s. A perfect match for offloading camera cards and SSDs at speed for high-end feature films. 100MB/Sec advantage adds up to 360000MB per hour, 8640000MB per day. You do the math on the time saving on a shoot that lasts several months!
All SymplyPRO DIT Thunderbolt desktops feature Linear Tape File System (LTFS) support, for compatibility with a myriad of backup and archive applications. Ensure data is stored in a non-proprietary format that is easy to interchange and migrate. In some use cases, LTFS can reduce the need for backup or archive software and allows users to easily interchange data using LTO cartridges or copying data to and from hard drives or SSDs.

Symply CableLess
All dual-drive desktop designs from Symply feature Symply CableLess technology – a unique design that allows for the easy removal of LTO drives, making them highly serviceable and easy to upgradeable. So, you can start with one LTO in your desktop system and add an additional drive in a matter of seconds, without even having to power the system off. Likewise for servicing, if in the unlikely event of a drive failure, the failed drive can be removed without the need to power off the whole system, and only the failed drive needs to be returned for repair. Simple, as you might expect.
Compatibility
As a partner with IBM, SymplyPRO LTO products are fully compatible with software applications that support IBM LTO drive technology. In addition, Symply has carried out extensive interoperability testing with the following popular backup and archive utilities for macOS and Windows including Archiware, Hedge, Imagine Products, Retrospect, StorageDNA, Veeam, XenData, and YoYotta to ensure the best possible customer experience.
