One question we’re often asked is why we choose LTO as the base component for our Symply backup and archive products. The simple answer is because it’s the best choice. LTO tape or Linear Tape Open, and also known as the LTO Ultrium format is a powerful, scalable, adaptable open tape format that is optimized for high capacity, maximum storage density and performance.
Many people will say tape technology is outdated. And that is just not true. The advances in LTO technology have been rapid and remarkable. No other archive technology comes close. LTO remains unrivalled in terms of cost for capacity, reliability with a proven 30 year+ lifetime. It provides a secure and portable way to store multiple copies of your data, often complementing disk and flash-based storage systems by providing an offline backup and/or archive option that means your data remains secure.
LTO is good for the environment, it is a Green storage technology. It solves many of the problems caused by maintaining archives and backups on power-hungry spinning disks. With energy consumption of stored data growing almost exponentially every year, many of our customers are looking at ways to reduce their carbon footprint and save money at the same time. Moving data from disk storage to LTO can do just that, as an HDD system can use up to 70 times more energy than tape.
One common myth is that LTO is slow , when in fact LTO is Extreme performance. Despite the common misperceptions that backing or archiving to tape is slower than disk, tape delivers some of the best performance on the market with LTO-9 transfer speeds for Full Height drives at 400MB/sec which means it’s faster than a typical 7,200 RPM (130 MB/sec) HDD for streaming data.
Whether you’re archiving valuable data, managing hours of digital video or simply transporting large data files, LTO tape is an ideal solution for some of the most demanding applications.
